everyone is bad at it for the first 6 months. then you and the dog figure each other out. that's the whole thing. there's no version where you start good. you just start.
Convince me
Apartment is fine for it. Schedule is fine. I'm just scared I'll be bad at it.

foster first. like literally call a rescue tomorrow. you'll know in a week if a dog fits your life and the dog gets a break from a shelter either way. low stakes way to find out.

look the fact that you're scared you'll be bad at it is exactly why you won't be. people who are bad at having dogs never worry about it for one second beforehand. that's the tell.

counter, wait 6 months. if your schedule is 'fine' but you're not sure, that's a yellow flag. dogs need stupid amounts of routine. better to get one when you're certain than re-home one because life shifted.
